Thrifting is one of the best ways to find unique pieces that will make your style stand out from the crowd- and all at a hugely discounted price! As thrifting becomes increasingly popular, use these top tips to make sure you know exactly how to thrift like a pro.
1)Watch for Sale
Remember that thrift stores are one of the cheapest option to buy amazing clothing, but it does not stop them to offer even deeper discounts. Subscribe for newsletters and follow social media of your favorite Thrift Store to never miss a great sale opportunity. During sale you can find clothes often cheaper than $1.
2) Create a thrift list
Before you go thrifting, save a thrift list to your phone. You could either make a list of items you are after in your Notes app, or scroll through Pinterest or Instagram and save some posts for inspiration. Having a pre prepared list will stop you from buying items just because they are cheap!
3) Know your measurements
There is nothing more frustrating than arriving home with a piece you really love- just to find out it doesn’t fit you. Some thrift stores won’t have changing rooms available and vintage sizes can be very deceiving. Always have your measurements saved or memorised, especially if you are thrifting items like jeans.
4) Dress appropriately
Leading on from #3, make sure you wear clothes that you can easily slip pieces on over the top of, for example a light weight t-shirt and leggings.
5) Learn to scan
Thrifting can be a highly time consuming activity. Leaning to scan quickly through isles is a must and means that you aren’t wasting valuable shopping time looking at every single item in the shop.
6) Be prepared to hunt
In the famous words of Miley Cyrus- it’s the climb! Or in this case- the hunt. Finding something you love while thrifting definitely isn’t guaranteed and especially if you are after something specific, it can take a lot of time and patience to find the perfect item. Try to just enjoy the experience and keep going- you will find it!
7) Be flexible
You may not find the exact item you are after while thrifting, but that’s the beauty of second hand clothes! They are unique and will make you stand out from the crowd.
8) Ask the experts
If you haven’t managed to find exactly what you are looking for, a good hack is asking the employees when they re-stock. This will mean you will be first in line to get your hands on the new pieces.
9) Thrift on weekdays.
Just like any other shops, thrift stores will be busiest at weekends which will make it really hard to scan through and find those absolute gems. If possible, head to your local thrift store on a weekday for a more relaxed, less busy experience!
